A weekend of basketball

For a little change of pace I photographed three basketball games in two days. I started with the Northwestern Wildcats beating up on the Iowa Hawkeyes in NCAA action and then had a doubleheader on saturday in Milwaukee. Marquette defeated Cincinnati, and then in the NBA, the Orlando Magic topped the Milwaukee Bucks.

Quarterback Duel

What a crazy game. Before the game started the buzz was that the Packers were not going to start Aaron Rodgers , Clay Matthews and a few others. The Lions were playing for a better playoff seed so they had something to play for, while the Packers already had clinched home field for the playoffs. After an almost 2 hour first half in a windy and cold Lambeau Field, the game finally ended with the Packers defeating the Lions 45-41 and in a quarterback duel, the Packers Matt Flynn threw for 6 TD’s and 480 yards a franchise record, while the Lions Matthew Stafford threw for 5 TD’s and 520 yards. So much for the defense.

42Below Vodka at The Bedford

Last week I did a shoot for 42Below Vodka at The Bedford in Chicago. The building was an old bank so they took the vault area of the bank and turned it into a restaurant/lounge. The neat part about the restaurant is that they kept the vault just as it was when it was a bank, including all the safety deposit boxes and the huge doors to the vault.

Comedian Stephen Colbert

The other day I was looking through some photographs that I had taken earlier in
the year and came across some images that I shot for one of my clients,
Northwestern University in Evanston, Illinois. They had me shoot their graduation ceremonies in June and comedian Stephen Colbert delivered the Northwestern Commencement Speech. Needless to say, he had the faculty and students
laughing along as he remembered his days as a young college student at Northwestern.

Filet Mingon

At Sheridan Road Magazine we are doing a feature story of the top steak restaurants on the north shore for the next issue. Instead of shooting a traditional food shot, of a steak and the sides, I needed to come up with something that better illustrated the article and what better way than to get a nice Filet Mingon on the grill. This was shot in the kitchen
at Pete Millers in Evanston.

Volleyball

The other day I had to photograph the Hinsdale South volleyball team for Hinsdale Living,
a new magazine published by JWC Media. A standard team shot was out of the question,
as we wanted something that was more unique and very different. Usually the team shot
for high school sports is shot by a studio that does both individual and team shots, pretty boring stuff. So when I told they team that this was going to be a picture, that broke the rules of the standard team shot, they were thrilled. My only request for them was to have fun, think out of the box and get crazy.

RedBox

The other day I had a shoot for Redbox, the movie rental kiosk company. They were doing a filming at one of their Kiosk’s on Cermak Ave. in Chicago, and needed stills to go along with the video they were producing. They had a handful of models for the shoot and just needed a few images of them using one of the Redbox kiosks. The first three hours were spent documenting the video crew while they were shooting the video. After they finally took a half hour break, I was able to get a few shots in, before they spent the rest of the day filming the video. After shooting a lot of images with the
actors at the kiosk, I decided we needed something more natural and not too stagged looking, so I had them walk away from the kiosk as if they just rented a movie and were happy to head home to watch the DVD. With a bit of creative post processing in Lightroom 3……

Light

Sometimes the light at Miller Park in Milwaukee looks magical. Especially the late afternoon light that streams through a bank of windows on the west side of the stadium. During a recent playoff game I was assigned as
the pool photographer for behind home plate and as luck would have it, the sun was setting and a left handed pitcher was throwing.

The other day I photographed Matt Maloney , co-founder and CEO of GrubHub.com. for an upcoming story in the Financial Times . Grub Hub is an online restaurant service with
over 15,000 delivery and pick up restaurants across the country that you can order food from. They are headquartered in Chicago, Illinois.

Brew Crew Baseball

What a game. The Milwaukee Brewers defeated the Arizona Diamondbacks 3-2 in 10 innings to advance to the NLCS against the St. Louis Cardinals. Nyjer Morgan A.K.A. “Tony Plush” drove in the game winning run on a single in the 10th to send the Diamondbacks home. The Brewers had once again came back in dramatic fashion to win the series. Baseball is not one of my favorite sports to photograph,
but with an ending like this, how could you not like it.

Richard Marx

Earlier in the week I photographed singer/songwriter Richard Marx in his recording
studio for Sheridan Road magazine. From the period of 1987 to 1990, Richard Marx
was the first male solo artist in history to have his first 7 singles reach the top 5 on
Billboard’s singles chart, the hit’s included “Hold On to the Nights,” “Satisfied” and a
worldwide classic, “Right Here Waiting.” He has been nominated for 3 Grammy Awards
and received an American Music Award nomination for favorite male singer.

Ryder Cup Tug

The 2012 Ryder Cup will be played next year at the Medinah Country Club in Medinah, Illinois and they held a press conference to promote the event with European Ryder Cup Captain José María Olazábal, and United States Ryder Cup Captain Davis Love III . Afer the press conference the two captains went outside for a photo op with the Ryder Cup Trophy.

Deer Path Inn Bar

I was called to do an Ad shoot for the Historic Deer Path Inn located in Lake Forest, Illinois. They wanted a picture to showcase the bar area, with patrons drinking at he bar. Right when I saw the bar room , I knew it would translate better in black and white with kind of a throw back look. Not sure if they will use the color or black and white version, but hoping for the black and white.
